Why are so few people waking up?
Nukunu:
There are many reasons for this. Here are the most important:
- Very few are really interested in enlightenment. They believe that they can find fulfilment in their mind and senses. But this is not possible.
- Among those who are interested there are those who believe that awakening can be seen as practising a hobby. Many teachers also proclaim that you have to believe a lot of things and do certain practices. But the truth is that any kind of “doing” takes you away.
- Others who are interested in enlightenment do not understand that truth is a “pathless land”. Very, very few understand what Buddha meant when he said “Stopping is Bodhi” (the word Bodhi means enlightenment). They turn this saying into a technique – into a practice for enlightenment. But if you try to stop, this becomes a doing. No, what Buddha meant was “simply stop”.
This is why so few wake up. But if you have an enlightened teacher, the very trust in him or her will be a tremendous help.
